The short answer
The things that do not make the move are their own job, and they are cheaper than you think if you book them properly. A quarter truck is $241, three-eighths is $338, a half truck is $431. If it is a short list, price it per item: a sofa is $126, a six-to-eight-seat dining table is $163, a standard dresser is $126, a queen mattress and box spring set is $143. Minimum visit is $75.
The important thing is when. Book the removal for the day after the movers, before the walk-through. That is the gap where everything goes wrong otherwise.
The Salt Lake moving calendar
This valley moves on a tight seasonal rhythm and the good windows disappear fast.
- Late April and early May. University of Utah and Westminster turn over, the blocks below campus and through the lower Avenues empty out, and every truck in the city is busy.
- June through August. Family moving season. Closings cluster, and the south valley — Herriman, Riverton, Daybreak, Lehi — sees a lot of it.
- End of any month. Leases end together. The last four days are always the pinch.
- Winter relocations. Less common but real, especially with Silicon Slopes hiring pulling people into Lehi and Draper. Moving in February means snow, ice and short daylight, and a curb that may have a plow berm in it.
Book a week ahead in any of those windows. Booking two days ahead in the first week of May is optimistic.
What gets left behind, and what it costs
The pattern is consistent. Anything heavy, anything the new place has no room for, and anything the movers quoted extra to take:
| Sofa / Couch | $126 |
| Dining Table (6-8 seat) | $163 |
| Dining Chair (each) | $45 |
| Dresser (Large / Double) | $148 |
| Entertainment Center / TV Stand | $96 |
| Bookcase, Particleboard / Flat-pack | $100 |
| Washer | $133 |
| Dryer | $128 |
A very ordinary leftover list: sofa $126 + dining table $163 + four dining chairs at $45 each ($45 + $45 + $45 + $45 = $180) = $126 + $163 + $180 = $469. Compare that against a half truck at $431 and you book the half truck. Add the laundry pair if it is staying: $133 + $128 = $261 on its own, or roll it into the volume.
Why flat-pack furniture never survives a Utah move
Particleboard bookcases, cheap dressers and the desk that has been taken apart twice do not travel. The fasteners have already been stripped, the backing panel is stapled to nothing, and it will not come out of the second disassembly in one piece. If it is going up a flight of stairs into an Avenues apartment, or down into a basement unit, it will not survive.
Price it honestly: a flat-pack bookcase is $100 to remove, and a replacement is often less than the cost of moving it twice and having it fall apart anyway. The solid-wood equivalent is worth moving — a tall solid-wood bookcase is $123 to remove, and it will still be a bookcase at the other end.
Move-out order of operations
- Two weeks out: walk every room and mark what is not coming. Be ruthless about the garage and the basement storage room — those are the rooms that get postponed and then panicked over.
- One week out: list anything sellable on KSL Classifieds. A week is roughly how long a decent piece takes to move in this valley.
- Book the removal now, for the day after the movers.
- Moving day: keep the leftover pile in one place — the garage, or the front room. Do not scatter it.
- Removal day: the crew clears it and sweeps. Then you do the final clean and the walk-through against an empty house.
Deposits, walk-throughs and closings
If you are renting, an item left in the unit is the fastest way to lose part of a deposit, and a mattress left by the dumpster is worse because it usually comes with a charge attached. If you are selling, most contracts require the property delivered broom-clean and empty, and a buyer's final walk-through in this market is not a formality. A basement full of the seller's shelving is a closing-day argument.
Either way, the fix is a fixed price and a booked date. You know what the clearance costs before you commit to the handover date, which means it never becomes the thing that slips.
Winter moves
If you are handing over between December and February, add one step: clear and salt the route from the door to the street the night before. Old walk-ups on 700 East, steep driveways in the upper Avenues and Federal Heights, and long north-facing drives on the benches all hold ice long after the roads are clear.
We work through winter and we do not charge for it. Snow does not change the sofa price. It only changes how long the carry takes, and a shovelled path is worth more to the day than anything else you could do.
Frequently asked questions
When should I book the cleanout relative to the move?
The day after the movers, before your walk-through or closing. That gives you a clear house for the final clean and no risk of the pile still being there on handover day.
How much does it cost to clear what the movers left?
Most leftover piles are a quarter to a half truck, $241 to $431. A short list is cheaper priced per item — a sofa is $126 and a queen mattress and box spring set is $143.
Can you come on a weekend at the end of the month?
Yes, and that is the busiest slot in the valley. Book at least a week ahead for the last weekend of any month, and further ahead for early May.
Do I have to be there?
Someone needs to provide access. If you have already handed the keys to an agent or manager who can let us in, that works, as long as you have approved the total.
Will you take the washer and dryer?
Yes. A washer is $133 and a dryer is $128, or $189 for a stacked combo unit. Disconnect the water if you can, and tell us if the pair is in the basement.
